Tuesday, 22 Aug 2017: Ford Factory Tour; Henry Ford Museum; Free Time (B)
A visit to The Henry Ford is a "must-do" experience when in Michigan. The Henry Ford Museum is more than just a car museum. We begin with a factory tour to see where automobile manufacturing as we know it came of age, and where the technology of tomorrow is on display today. We'll then visit the museum, a vast collection assembled by Ford of artifacts documenting the breakthroughs, both big and small, that have made America what it is today. The afternoon is free for your own further exploration and discovery. You can easily spend all day here. Greenfield Village, a vast outdoor museum, is co-located on the grounds and gives you a look at life in the late 1800s. Those interested can pay a separate admission fee and visit the village.
Wednesday, 23 Aug 2017: Frankenmuth Visit; Ferry to Mackinac Island (B)
Today we head to the village of Frankenmuth, originally founded by German pioneers in the 1840s, where you'll think you've landed in Bavaria. There will be time to enjoy lunch and walk around to visit the unique shops along Main Street. We continue on to Mackinaw City where we board the ferry to Mackinac Island, just 20 minutes away. It's a delightful ride across the Mackinac Straits as we watch the island and the Grand Hotel come into view. Overnight Mackinac Island - 2 nights
Thursday, 24 Aug 2017: Mackinac Island Carriage Tour; Free Time; Group Dinner (B,D)
This morning we take a horse-drawn carriage tour of the island to visit the historic fort, Surrey Hills Museum, Arch Rock and Stuart House. After our tour there is free time to explore this compact picturesque town further. You might visit a butterfly farm or perhaps rent a bike and cycle around the island--a very popular pastime. Or, if you like to laze by the water, you can watch the ferries ply the Straits, making "rooster tails." What surprises most people when they see the water of Lake Huron for the first time is how sparkling clean and clear it is. This evening we will have dinner together.
Friday, 25 Aug 2017: Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore Boat Tour; Group Dinner (B,D)
We depart today for Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore and enjoy a boat tour of the wild beauty along the Lake Superior shore. Sandstone cliffs, beaches, sand dunes, waterfalls, lakes, forest, and shoreline beckon. Lovers Leap, Indian Head, Miners Castle, and Chapel Rock are just a few of the natural landmarks seen on this cruise. On our way, we cross the Mackinac Bridge--the Mighty Mac--the longest suspension bridge in the Western Hemisphere. Overnight Munising - 1 night
Saturday, 26 Aug 2017: Traverse City Downtown Walk; Free Time; Farewell Dinner (B,D)
Traverse City is considered one of the best small towns in America and a top "foodie" destination as well. It has a rich history in which Native Americans, missionaries, lumberjacks, mariners and farmers all played an important role. A good way to learn about the people who have left their mark on this landscape is to take a self-guided downtown walk, since many of the area’s most interesting historical sites are outdoors. The rest of the day is yours to further explore the area. We have our Farewell Dinner tonight. Overnight Traverse City - 1 night
Sunday, 27 Aug 2017: Return Home from Traverse City (B)
Sadly, our time together has come to an end. Based on the departure time you provide WTT, your Tour Leader can assist with organizing travelers into small groups so you can ride-share to the airport if you wish.
