New Orleans, LA
Featuring the French Quarter

May 28 - 31, 2010

The French Quarter and the downtown areas of New Orleans have enjoyed a resurgence in popularity as new visitors and those returning find that New Orleans is still a wonderful destination.

Come join us over the Memorial Day weekend where we will call the French Quarter our home. In Jackson Square, only a few blocks from our hotel, you can see street performers, get your fortune read, enjoy a lovely park, or just people-watch (always a fun thing to do). If food is your passion, you will love the choices. Don't forget the wonderful Beignets - a powdery sugar coated bread that is a New Orleans breakfast - or anytime - favorite. We love New Orleans and know you will too!

Sunday, 30 May: Explore New Orleans

Today is your day to explore the French Quarter and New Orleans. The WTT Tour Leader will have plenty of suggestions for you. Consider visiting Mardi Gras World or take a Bayou Tour. If you have never seen a bayou, it is a beautiful ecosystem thick with cypress trees, dripping moss, alligators, flora, and of course, water. If you have not had a beignet yet, you should make a stop at Cafe Du Monde in the French Quarter and try them. We will regroup later today and have dinner together in the French Quarter. (B,D)

BeignetsThe word beignet (pronounced bey-YAY) comes from the early Celtic word bigne meaning "to raise." It is also French for "fritter." Beignets, a New Orleans specialty, are fried, raised pieces of yeast dough, usually about 2 inches in diameter or 2 inches square. After being fried, they are sprinkled with sugar or coated with various icings. It is like a sweet doughnut, but the beignet is square shaped and without a hole. Beignets are the forerunners of the raised doughnut. When you hear people in New Orleans say, "Goin'  fo' coffee an' doughnuts," they mean coffee and beignets. In 1986, beignets became the Louisiana State Doughnut. Source: www.whatscookingamerica.net
