We have visited Iceland many times and every time we have the most fabulous experiences imaginable. Iceland is a place you have to see to believe. Wild beauty, glaciers, hot springs, volcanoes, and much more await you.
     In a place where the sun sets after 10pm and dusk lingers for hours, we will have long days to enjoy the sights and activities of Iceland. This is an active sightseeing trip, with activities such as easy hiking, glacier walk, horseback riding, and more. Any woman in reasonable shape can do this trip, even if you have never done some of these sports. We finish the trip with a visit to the famous Blue Lagoon where we can relax in the warm waters! Airport:  Reykjavík-Keflavík International Airport (KEF)

Tour Begins:  At the airport on Saturday, August 7. Flights arrive before 8:00am.

Tour Ends: At the airport in time to make afternoon flights on Friday, August 13.

Early Arrival Cost:  WTT is not making early arrival arrangements for this trip.

Special Notes Concerning this Trip:

- You will need a valid passport for this trip. Check your expiration date.

- Your passport cannot expire less than 6 months after your travel completes.

- This is an active trip. An woman in reasonable physical condition can handle the activities. This tour is not suitable for anyone with walking difficulties.

You will fly overnight from the US to Iceland, leaving the US on Friday, August 6.

 

Saturday, August 7: Arrive Iceland, Reykjavik City Tour, Welcome Reception.

You will arrive early morning at the International Airport in Iceland. A 40 minute transfer from the airport will place you in the most northern capital city in the world. We will do a sightseeing tour of Reykjavick before arriving at our hotel. Rest for the remainder of the day or explore the city. We’ll have a welcome reception early this evening and talk about the upcoming week’s adventures. Overnight Plaza Hotel.   (Reception)  

 

Sunday, August 8: Nationalpark Thingvellir – Glacier and  Waterfalls

We leave Reykjavik today and head west drive over the mountain pass Lyngdalsheidi to the National Park Thingvellir. We then drive through the beautiful rift valley between the tectonic continental plates.  Continue over the mountain pass Kaldidalur to glacier Langjokull.  In the afternoon we go on to one of the most exiting pearls of the Icelandic Nature, the magnificent  waterfalls Barnafoss Waterfall  and Hraunfossar Waterfall, pouring down in to Hvita River Canyon from beneath an old lava field. Close to their location are the famous glaciers Eiriksjokull and Langjokull.  We will also stop at Deildartunguhver, the largest thermal spring in Iceland and visit the Medieval center at Reykholt. Dinner at Hotel. (B,D)

 

Monday, August 9: Snæfellsnes – Mystique and Nature; Boat Trip

It is said about the Snæfellsnes peninsula that it is Iceland in a nutshell as it offers its own fjords, ice cap, volcanoes and fishing and farming communities.

We drive through its beautiful scenery and visit the lovely little town Stykkishólmur.  From the harbour in Stykkisholmur we take a boat on the Breiðafjörður where birdlife thrives in its own natural environment.  When on shore again we drive to the tip of the peninsula  around the majestic glacier Snæfellsjökull to Arnarstapi and Hellnar. Late afternoon we arrive at our hotel for the next 2 nights.  Dinner at hotel. Overnight Hamar Hotel or similar - 2 nights. (B,D)

 

Tuesday, August 10: Gullfoss and Geysir; Icelandic Horses

Today we head south again and drive through the green valleys of Borgafjördur to Uxahryggir mountain road and on to Gullfoss and Geysir.  In the afternoon experience the Icelandic horse and go on a 1 hour riding tour. Dinner at hotel. (B,D)

 

Wednesday, August 11: Þórsmörk – Glacier Walk

We’ll leave our hotel this morning and go to Solheimajokull Glacier. It is a magnificent phenomenon, rugged, raw and ever changing hub of ancient frozen water. We will explore the crevasse riddled outlet glacier with its amazing ice formations, sink holes and jagged ridges with an experienced glacier guide.  In the afternoon we drive through the farmlands of Southern Iceland and on to the beautiful Thorsmork nature reserve, Iceland's most popular hiking area, surrounded by three glaciers and known for its wildlife and arctic vegetation. Dinner at Hotel Helka and our home for the next 2 nights. (B,D)

 

Thursday, August 12: Unforgettable Landmannalaugar

This day’s trek leads us to the jewels of the highlands. We will drive in a northern direction to the glacial river Thjorsa in Thjorsardalur Valley. We’ll visit Mt. Hekla, Iceland’s most active volcano. Then we’re off to the nature reserve Landmannalaugar with its hot springs and colorful hills and mountains. (Don't forget your swimming gear.) In the afternoon we head south, driving through the agriculture area in the southern lowland and on along the south coast to the Fishing Village Stokkseyri.  Dinner at local restaurant.  (B,D)

 

Friday, August 13: Blue Lagoon Health Spa and return to airport

Morning at leisure before we depart for the famous Blue Lagoon. A collection of mineral water pools situated among a lava field, this striking assembly of building and pools is in harmony with the natural landscape.  Bathing in the Blue Lagoon is not only enjoyable for the warm waters that flow from deep beaneath the earth, but the mineral rich water - high in silica and roughly 1/3 the salt content of seawater - is also reputed to have healing properties for your skin.

For those interested, enjoy an optional 30 minute in-water massage. While you float on a support mat in the water, enjoy a deep relaxing massage, using a massage oil that contains Blue Lagoon active ingredients and essential oils. It is a unique experience for body and soul.  COST: $55

From the Blue Lagoon the airport is only 15 minutes away. What a way to relax before returning to the airport and home. (B)
