Traveling by Train

  Come see America's West in a way you'll remember forever - by Train!  Our trip begins in the Mile High City of Denver, which offers 300 days of sunshine every year! While in Denver we will visit The Garden of the Gods and Pikes Peak before we board our train and travel west to Salt Lake City where we will attend a performance by the Mormon Tabernacle Choir and tour the city. We again board the train and head west to San Francisco. What better way to end the trip than with memorable views of the San Francisco Bay and the Pacific Ocean! Oh yes, let's not forget about the beautiful fall colors to be seen from the train. Come join us for a special trip across this great country of ours.

 

Traveling by train across Colorado and concluding in San Francisco. What a great way to see the US West.

• Amtrak reserved seats from Denver to Salt Lake City

• Bedroom style accommodations on the train from Salt Lake City to San Francisco. (Meals from Salt Lake City to San Francisco provided by Amtrak.)

• Services of WTT tour leader and local guides

• Roomsharing: We will provide you a roommate  unless you:
  A) tell us you want to room with someone in particular, or
  B) you elect to pay the additional cost for a single room.

Travelers will make their own air reservations and are requested to arrive and depart as follows:

 

Arrival Airport: Denver (DEN)

Arrive:  Thursday, October 7 by 4:30pm. The tour begins at the hotel at 6:00pm.

Departure Airport:  San Francisco (SFO)

Depart: Wednesday, October 13 at your convenience.

 

Early Arrival:  For those who wish to arrive a day early in Denver, the cost will be:

     $120 dbl / $240 sgl

 

Special Notes Concerning this Tour:

- Travelers will be responsible for their own baggage or may hire porters, if available, in the train station.

- The train portion of the trip is in excess of 12 hours. Travelers should bring reading materials, cards or other items to pass the time when not enjoying the scenery of company of your fellow travelers.

- Sleeping arrangements on the Salt Lake City to San Francisco train portion of the trip are bunk beds. The bunk beds fold up to provide in-compartment seating during the day-time portion of the journey.

Thursday, October 7 : Arrive in Denver, Welcome Reception

Arrive Denver no later than 4:30pm.  The tour begins at 6:00 pm in the lobby of the hotel for introductions and a welcome reception.  (Welcome Reception)

 

Friday, October 8 : Full Day Tour to Pikes Peak and Garden of the Gods

Garden of the Gods Park is a registered National Natural Landmark with 300' towering sandstone rock formations set against a backdrop of snow-capped Pikes Peak and brilliant blue skies.

At an altitude of 14,110 feet above sea level, Pikes Peak is the most visited mountain in North America. It forms a stunning backdrop for Colorado Springs and the Garden of the Gods.   Explorers, pioneers and immigrants made it the symbol of the 1859 Gold Rush to Colorado with the slogan, "Pikes Peak or Bust".  We will return to Denver and have a driving orientation tour of the city before returning to our downtown hotel. We'll have dinner together as a group. (B,D)

 

Saturday, October 9 : Denver to Salt Lake City via Train

Transfer to Denver’s Union Station for an 8:05 am departure to Salt Lake City.  Enjoy all the scenery along the way before arriving in Salt Lake City in the late evening.  Get together with the group in the lounge for conversation, enjoy the dinning car at your leisure, and watch the scenery go by. Sunday, October 10 - City Tour and Mormon Tabernacle Choir Performance, Depart for San Francisco

Our Sunday morning begins with a very special treat - a performance by the Mormon Tabernacle Choir. Our tour continues with other important sights such as the Magnificent Salt Lake Mormon Temple, the State Capital Building, Brigham Young’s Territorial Governor’s Mansion and others. We will depart Salt Lake City on an overnight train.  Sleeping car arrangements will give you a good night's sleep. (B,L) 

 

Monday, October 11: Arrival San Francisco

Arrival in San Francisco will be in the afternoon.  The Amtrak train will take us as far as Emeryville, CA. From here we will board an Amtrack provided motorcoach for transfer to San Francisco and to our hotel. (B,L)

 

Tuesday, October 12 : San Francisco City Tour, Free Time, Farewell Dinner

Our day begins with a city tour to learn about all the fascinating areas San Francisco has to offer. Spend the remainder of the day exploring San Francisco with your fellow travelers. You might want to consider visiting Alcatraz or one of the many other attractions this city has to offer. We will gather this evening for a farewell dinner. (B,D)

As an option, some travelers will want to visit Alcatraz.
Alcatraz Island offers a close-up look at the site of the first lighthouse and US fort on the West Coast, the infamous federal penitentiary long off-limits to the public, and the 18 month occupation by Indians of All Tribes. Rich in history, there is also a natural side to the Rock - gardens, tide pools, bird colonies, and bay views.

The optional cost for this 2 1/2 hour tour is $26.00 (2009 price - subject to change) and will be scheduled for the 3:55PM departure. Travelers will be billed for this optional excursion at final invoicing. (The cost of the Alcatraz tour is non-refundable once paid.)  

 

Wednesday, October 13 : Return Home

 Schedule your return at your convenience. The WTT tour leader will assist in coordinating ride-sharing to the airport. (B)
