Costa Rica is about the same size as Kentucky, but packed into this small country is an amazing variety of flora and fauna in an equally impressive array of landscapes - cool mountain valleys, sultry mangrove forests, and massive volcanoes draped with lush forests and topped with desolate craters. 
    Costa Rica has spectacular biological diversity: 850 species of birds, 205 species of mammals, 376 types of reptiles and amphibians, and more than 9,000 species of flowering plants, including 1,200 varieties of orchids.

    This trip to Costa Rica will incorporate a wide variety of adventure activities as we explore our way from San Jose, the capital of Costa Rica, to Guanacaste on the Pacific Ocean. You can depart from San Jose Airport. It is a 4.5 hour trip by car at an approximate cost of $80pp based on 2 passengers. Make your return flight from San Jose no earlier than 1:00pm.

Early Arrival Cost:  To avoid jet lag and possible flight delays, consider arriving a day early. The room cost will be:

Special Notes Regarding this Tour:

- This is an active trip. You must be in reasonable physical condition and no mobility issue to enjoy this trip.

- You will need a valid passport for this trip.

- Check your expiration date. It cannot expire less than 6 months after your travel completes.

 

Hotel Rooms Release Date: 15 April 2010

Women Traveling Together must release any unsold hotel rooms for this trip on the date listed above. Group room rates are no longer available after this date. 
 

Should there be any space available after this date a "Hotel Room Surcharge" of $164 will be assessed to cover the additional hotel room costs incurred by Women Traveling Together to add the traveler to this trip.

Thursday, 1 July: Arrive San Jose; Welcome Dinner

Arrive San Jose, Costa Rica at your convenience but no later than 5:00pm Transfer provided to the hotel where the WTT tour leader will greet you. The tour begins at 6:30pm in the lobby of the hotel where we will meet as a group, make introductions, and then have a light dinner together at the hotel. Should you arrive earlier in the day, enjoy the hotel amenities or take a cab into San Jose.  Accommodations: Doubletree Cariari Hotel or similar – 1 Night. (Light D)

  

Friday, 2 July: Pacuare River Rafting and Afternoon at Leisure

We will depart San Jose early in the morning and drive through the old capital city of Cartago and the lush green farmlands to the banks of the Pacuare River with a stop for breakfast on the way.

The Pacuare River is one of the top five rivers in the world for its scenery. The Pacuare runs through some of the most beautiful and pristine rainforest in Costa Rica. Much of the land is reserved for indigenous people and will never be developed. At the banks of the river our expert guides will provide everyone their rafting gear before we get in the rafts. Each raft holds 5-7 plus the guide. If you are comfortable around water you will LOVE this rafting adventure. No rafting experience is necessary. The river passes through scenic canyons where waterfalls plummet down into the rapidly coursing river below.

This exciting journey takes an hour and a half before we arrive at our lodge. The afternoon is at leisure. You may want to try a canopy adventure, a guided hike to the waterfalls, or just relax & enjoy the nature and the facilities of the lodge. Dinner is at the lodge tonight. Overnight Pacuare Lodge - 1 night. (B,L,D)

 

Saturday, 3 July:  Pacuare River Rafting, Part II

After breakfast we will continue down the Pacuare River. The river becomes more thrilling as you begin to use the skills and experience you already gained. You may stop to explore side streams that lead to striking waterfalls and pools with a natural waterslide that tempts you to jump right in. The morning ends having conquered one of the wildest and most scenic rivers in the world. After lunch we will travel to the Sarapiqui area and stay 2 nights at La Quinta Sarapiqui. (B,L)

 

Sunday, 4 July:  Sarapiqui and River boat tour

The beautiful lands of Sarapiqui area will capture your attention and the impressive Sarapiqui river will show you all kinds of wildlife. A guided boat tour through the river will be the highlight of the day. Birds, monkeys, caimans, iguanas, crocodiles are just part of the wildlife in this river. (B,D)

 

Monday, 5 July: Arenal Volcano Region Hiking and Hot Springs

Today we will travel to Arenal area. The rain forest of Arenal offers a unique diverse variety of ecosystems, some of the most natural beauty of Costa Rica and the majestic Arenal volcano with its spectacular thundering explosions. In the afternoon you will visit the Arenal Volcano.  Enjoy the most extraordinary view of the Arenal Volcano on a gentle hike along the base of this marvelous “Mountain of Fire”. The Hike begins on one of the trails close to the volcano, this trail will take us through the forest over recent lava flows and the area destroyed in 1968 now in the process of regeneration. We are going to be on this trail for about 2 ˝ hours. Following the hike, you will enjoy a relaxing time at Baldi Hot Springs. At the hot springs you can enjoy a healthy and relaxing soak; it is also possible to see the Arenal Volcano erupting from a comfortable spa or while you are having dinner. 2 nights at Magic Mountain Hotel.  (B,D)

  

Tuesday, 6 July:  Arenal ATV Adventure

Your adventure begins with an orientation meeting and the instructions to operate your ATV. The tour will not only give you the opportunity for adventure (where you will be challenged by either the dust or the mud, depending the season) and fun, but you will also enjoy nature and unique views of the majestic Arenal Volcano. We ride to La Fortuna Waterfall first, next to Jauri Town to observe different types of plantations and then continue to La Guaria Town, overlooking the Arenal River. There will be a short stop for snacks and a possible refreshing shower. The return trail goes through pastureland and includes a stop to enjoy the Arenal Volcano while your guide will explain its history on your way back to the station. (B,L)

  

Wednesday, 7 July: Travel to Paradisus Playa Conchal Resort; Afternoon free

Today we will travel to the Guanacaste province in the North Pacific coast. It is Costa Rica’s largest region with unique towns, fantastic beaches, belching volcanoes and unbelievable wildlife. Our hotel for the remainder of the trip is the fabulous Paradisus Playa Conchal Resort. This all-inclusive resort includes a junior suite garden view with unlimited food, drinks, and all non-motorized water sports such as kayaking. There is an on-site spa and many other activities you can participate in. Located on the Pacific ocean with beaches, pools, and much more, this will be 3 days of paradise! The remainder of the day is at leisure to enjoy the beach and the beautiful surroundings.   (B,D)

 

Thursday, 8 July: Vida Aventura Nature Park

Think "Six Flags" but instead of roller coasters there are canopy tours, horseback riding, waterslides, mud baths and hot springs for a day of fun in the sun!  This full day adventure at the Vida Aventura Nature Park is located on the outskirts of the Rincon de la Vieja and Miraflores volcanoes and lunch is included at the park. We will return to the resort this evening. (B,L,D)

 

Friday, 9 July: Paradisus Playa Conchal Resort

The day is at leisure to enjoy the resort facilities and the beach. You will not be bored! There are many activities to choose from. Stroll around, take a swim, visit the spa, or take an optional tour. (B,L,D)

 

Saturday, 10 July: Group Transfer to Liberia airport; Return Home.

Today there will be 2 group transfers to the Liberia airport (located 45 minutes from the resort) for our departing flights.  Transfer #1: Flights departing at or before 9:00am. Transfer #2:  For flights departing at or after 12:00 noon.  (Note: if you wish to depart at times other than the included transfer times you will be responsible for your own transfer) (B)

 

Alternate Departure Airport: You can return to San Jose today and fly from San Jose. The trip by car is approximately 4.5 hours. The cost is approximately $80 based on at least 2 passengers. If you choose this option you will be responsible for your airport transfer cost. Make your return flight no earlier than 1:00PM.
