Kayaking & Lodge Stay
God's Pocket, British Columbia

July 4 - 12, 2009

Between the north end of Vancouver Island and the British Columbia mainland is the Queen Charlotte Strait.  This area is widely regarded as a kayaker's paradise.  Hundreds of islands make up this stunning archipelago, home to whales, seals, porpoises, and bald eagles along with some of the lowest rainfall and lightest winds on the British Columbia coast. This, plus the opportunity to stay in a remote rustic resort with all the amenities, makes it the ideal trip for both novice and experienced sea kayakers who want to combine paddling in the wilderness and ample opportunities to see wildlife.

Tentative Itinerary

Saturday, July 4:  Arrive Vancouver, British Columbia, Welcome Dinner

Arrive Vancouver no later than 1:00pm.  We will acquaint ourselves with this beautiful city with a city tour including some of the most popular sights:  Canada Place, Granville Mall, Robson Street, Stanley Park, Gastown and Chinatown.  After our tour, we will gather for a welcome dinner.

Sunday, July 5:  Vancouver, Port Hardy

This day will be yours to explore before boarding a flight to Port Hardy in the afternoon.  You may want to return to the Gastown area to soak up the city's atmosphere, see a working steam-powered clock, visit unique shops and enjoy a drink at one of the pubs.  For the ultimate shopping experience, head to Robson Street where you'll find everything from small boutique shops to larger high-end fashion chains.

Monday, July 6:  God's Pocket Resort

At 8:30 am, there will be an orientation meeting and meet our guides.  Our adventure starts with a one-hour scenic boat trip from Port Hardy past rugged mountains, forested islands, and the wildlife rich waters of Queen Charlotte Strait to God's Pocket Resort.  The moment you arrive, you'll appreciate the charm of this rustic island resort, located in the heart of God's Pocket Provincial Park. Its seven rooms provide comfort, all the amenities of home and ocean views that take your breath away. Upon arriving at the lodge, there is a brief orientation meeting and time to settle into your room. After lunch, the guides will give an orientation to kayaking and safety before leading an afternoon paddling excursion nearby.

Tuesday, July 7 - Friday, July 10:  God's Pocket Resort

Each day we will depart on daily paddling excursions to explore the adjacent islands and passages of Queen Charlotte Strait.  Typically we will paddle for 2 hours in the morning, take an hour or two for lunch on a scenic island beach, and spend another 2 hours in the kayaks before returning to the comforts of the resort.  If you need a break from kayaking, you have the option to spend the day exploring island trails on foot or beach combing deserted beaches.  Evenings are spent in the common room socializing, playing board games, watching natural history videos or reading books from the lodge library.  A moonlight paddle can add to a memorable day at God's Pocket.

Saturday, July 11:  Return to Vancouver, Farewell Dinner

We'll return to the dock in the morning for our boat trip back to Port Hardy and our flight back to Vancouver.  Free time in Vancouver until we gather for dinner together tonight.

Sunday, July 12 - Return home

Return at your convenience.

Note: Depending on home destination, you may be able to catch a flight on Saturday afternoon or a red-eye to the east coast.
