Tuesday, 19 Sep 2017: Day Trip to Versailles by Train; Evening Visit to the Eiffel Tower (B,L)
Our day begins with a train ride to The Palace of Versailles, the center of political power in France under Louis XIV. The breath-taking chateau features the King’s Grand Apartments, the Museum of the History of France and the Hall of Mirrors, where the Treaty of Versailles, ending the First World War, was ratified. We'll enjoy a picnic lunch at the Queen's Hamlet, a rustic retreat built for Marie Antoinette on the palace grounds. Afterward, we'll return to Paris with time to relax or explore further with your WTT Tour Leader before we regroup to visit the Eiffel Tower at dusk, a magical time when the lights across Paris begin to flicker on.
Wednesday, 20 Sep 2017: Musee d'Orsay; Free Afternoon (B)
After breakfast, we get an early start for a visit to the Musee D'Orsay, a charming museum housed in the former Gare d'Orsay, a Beaux-Arts railway station built between 1898 and 1900. This afternoon, your Tour Leader will have an itinerary to explore a charming Paris neighborhood, perhaps the Marais district to explore the artistic and cultural heart of Paris, once the nucleus of Jewish life in the city. Be sure to practice a few French phrases as we poke into a variety of shops and learn how Parisians go about their daily activities.
Thursday, 21 Sep 2017: Explore Montmartre; Walking Food Tour; Free Evening (B,L)
Today we'll explore Montmartre, walking along the steep and cobbled streets of one of the most historic and interesting neighborhoods in Paris. This has long been an artist district, where the likes of Picasso, Monet, Pissaro, van Gogh and Dali once had studios. Today, we'll find many local artists setting up canvases to capture the setting sun and incredible views from atop this large hill. We're in for a special treat today...a walking food tour where we taste some of the very best French foods and learn a bit about what makes them so special. After our tour, accompany your WTT Tour Leader on another short itinerary, or if you prefer, simply enjoy time at leisure.
Friday, 22 Sep 2017: Free Day (B)
The day is at leisure. Enjoy exploring on your own. Visit one or two of the city’s museums or explore more of the city’s many gardens and parks. Spend some time browsing through Paris’ famous department stores and boutiques. If you haven't been to the Louvre before, this afternoon might be a great time to plan a visit. With your included Paris Museum Pass you can bypass the often long lines. Or join your WTT Tour Leader for an optional excursion to a nearby French village. It might be Chartres and it's immense Gothic cathedral, a UNESCO World Heritage site, or perhaps a visit to Reims to visit to one of its famous champagne houses.
Saturday, 23 Sep 2017: Final Day to Explore Paris; Concert & Farewell Dinner
Today is our final day together in the City of Light. Your WTT Tour Leader will have a schedule of activities for today. This evening, after our Farewell Dinner at a typical Parisian bistro, we're in for an other-worldly experience as we treat ourselves to an uplifting classical concert (schedule permitting) at Sainte-Chapelle, a royal chapel within the medieval Palais de la Cite, the residence of the Kings of France until the 14th century. This church is a gem of Gothic style. Built in seven years, an impressive feat for the time, the Sainte-Chapelle was intended to house precious Christian relics, including Christ's crown of thorns, acquired by Saint Louis.
Sunday, 24 Sep 2017: Return Home
Sadly, our week in Paris has come to an end. Depart at your convenience. Your Tour Leader can help pair travelers for the ride back to the airport.
