B = Breakfast, L = Lunch, D = Dinner
Friday, 7 Apr 2017: Arrive Miami International Airport; Welcome Dinner (D)
Schedule your arrival no later than 4:00pm and take local transportation to the hotel. The tour begins in the lobby of the hotel at 6:00pm. This evening we will get better acquainted during our Welcome Dinner and discuss the week's adventures ahead. Overnight Coral Gables - 2 nights
Saturday, 8 Apr 2017: Everglades National Park; Airboat Ride (B)
After breakfast this morning we venture out into the Everglades, the country’s only subtropical preserve. The park is rich in bird life and is the only place in the world where alligators and crocodiles co-exist. We get oriented with a tram tour that takes us deep into the park where the scenery is spectacular and we're likely to see alligators in the wild. This afternoon, we climb aboard the swift airboats and fly across the surface of the water. What a blast!
Sunday, 9 Apr 2017: Fairchild Tropical Botanic Gardens; Drive to Key West (B,L)
Today we pay a visit to the lovely Fairfield Botanical Gardens. Since 1938 this center has been dedicated to exploring, explaining and conserving the world of tropical plants. These unparalleled collections are now a resource of world significance. We then ease ourselves into "island time" by taking a leisurely drive south on the Overland Highway, one of America's truly spectacular road trips, ultimately arriving at "the end of the road" in Key West late this afternoon. Overnight Key West - 3 nights
Monday, 10 Apr 2017: Hemingway House; Free Time with Hop On/Hop Off Ticket (B,D)
We start our day with a tour of the Hemingway House, nestled in the heart of Old Town Key West. From 1931-1940, American Nobel-winning author Ernest Hemingway lived in this lovely Spanish-Colonial house. After our visit we take advantage of the hop-on, hop-off trolley to see Key West and other points of interest such as Little White House, the vacation home of President Truman (entrance fee not included in tour price), and Southernmost Point, the well...southernmost point in the continental USA. Use your trolley pass all day or perhaps enjoy the pool area at the hotel. This evening we will regroup and have dinner together.
Tuesday, 11 Apr 2017: Day Trip to Dry Tortugas National Park (B)
About 70 miles west of Key West lies a cluster of seven islands composed of coral reefs and sand called the Dry Tortugas. Along with the surrounding shoals and waters, they make up Dry Tortugas National Park. Legends of pirates and sunken gold abound. Fort Jefferson, the largest of the 19th century American coastal forts, is a central feature. Crystal clear water and abundant marine life make this a fantastic snorkeling destination. This is a full-day excursion, departing at 7:15am and returning around 5:30pm and includes continental breakfast, a picnic lunch, snorkel gear and a 45-minute tour of the fort. The boat ride to the national park is a 2-hour ride. You may opt out of this day trip when you make your reservation, if you so wish.
If you opt out of Dry Tortugas, spend your day exploring, kayaking, or partaking in a myriad of other Key West activities. Your WTT Tour Leader will have suggestions as to how to enjoy your day. This evening would be a great time to visit Mallory Square – the site of Key West’s famous nightly sunset celebrations. It’s a carnival-like atmosphere where you can watch jugglers, acrobats and “Parrot Bill,” while sipping a cool drink as the sun sinks into the ocean. If the conditions are right you may even see the "green flash."
Wednesday, 12 Apr 2017: Morning in Key West; Return to Miami; Farewell Dinner (B,D)
This morning we have a last chance to see the sun rise over Key West, and to enjoy the beautiful drive back along the island highway to Miami. We will stop for an early dinner to reminisce about the fun week we've spent. After dinner we'll continue on to our hotel and check in. Overnight Coral Gables - 1 night
Thursday, 13 Apr 2017: Return Home from Miami (B)
Sadly, our time together has come to an end. Based on the departure time you provide WTT, your Tour Leader will organize travelers into small groups so you can ride-share to the airport if you wish.
